Metaphors and political discourse
MetaPol 2016
International conference
1-2 December 2016
University of Liège, Belgium
The research field of metaphors’ study is kicking and striving. One important dimension of the study of metaphors is their role in the political domain. The study of metaphors in political discourse, in their diversity, is a booming sub-field of metaphors’ study. Scholars from several disciplines seek to identify and analyze political metaphors but also to assess their impact and above all how they are used, by whom and why. The aim of this conference is to bring together these scholars and to foster an interdisciplinary dialogue about metaphors in political discourse. This potentially means bringing together scholars that usually do not meet.
In this perspective, we welcome papers from senior and junior researchers, from anywhere across the humanities, social and cognitive sciences including but without being limited to:
- Cognitive Linguistics
- Conversation and Discourse Analysis
- Corpus Linguistics
- Discursive Psychology
- Functional Linguistics
- Media and Mass Communication Studies
- Multimodality
- Political Science
- Pragmatics and Argumentation Theory
- Sociolinguistics
- Sociology
The conference is designed to be an avenue to present and discuss on-going research about metaphors in political discourse.
All papers will be allocated 15 minutes plus 15 minutes for questions.
Abstracts of up to 350 words can uploaded on the website of the conference before 1 May 2016. Notifications of acceptance will be communicated by 1 July 2016. Selected papers will be published in an edited volume to be submitted to an international publisher.
Confirmed plenary speakers are:
- Prof. Paul Thibodeau, Oberlin College, USA
- Prof. Gerard Steen, Universiteit van Amsterdam, The Netherlands
