Colleagues, there has been in academe as long as I can remember a debate
between whether university faculty should be public scholars, publishing
and appearing in popular media.
I have never understood the argument against scholars' participation in
public discourse or against affecting public policy.
Last night Marty Medhurst gave expert testimony on the presidential
election on CBS Evening News, adding to the prestige of our field as
several in our field have done periodically over the years, but perhaps
only relatively few.
