Cardiac monitors beep while green lines graph heartbeats. Respirators hiss as tubes supply oxygen. Monitoring and life-sustaining technologies click, whir, drip and occasionally erupt with warning signals, auditory reminders of patient health and safety. The Acoustics of Care profiles DooR to DooR, an organization that transforms the soundscape of the University of North Carolina hospitals. Founded by Joy Javits, DooR to DooR brings performing, literary and visual artists to inpatient and outpatient settings. Artists enlarge the sights and sounds of healthcare and foster healing possibilities.
Produced by Lynn M. Harter, Margaret M. Quinlan, and Evan L. Shaw in association with the Barbara Geralds Institute for Storytelling and Social Impact and The Courage of Creativity Initiative.
