Many centuries of rhetorical reflection have distinguished a variety of rhetorical devices (in antiquity considered mainly within the genus deliberativum) used in various forms of advice.
Observing the evolution of the means which are used to exert influence, we can see the transition from the domination of “hard” means (orders, commands, bans) to the preference of “soft” means (advice, tips and suggestions). Paradoxically, “soft” measures are not at all weak. Sometimes they work through the actual freedom to choose from a variety of proposals, yet quite often this freedom turns out to be illusory.
We invite you to send articles on deliberative rhetoric, which may include the following topics:
patterns of advice in historical, cultural and literary aspects;
typology of contexts for giving advice;
professionalisation of advice-giving process and its rhetorical manifestations;
rhetorical genres of advice;
specificity of rhetoric used in the advice considered in terms of the patterns of interaction, roles, topics.
