Call For Chapters "Media Literacy in Higher Education Environments"

Proposal Submission Deadline: January 30, 2017
Media Literacy in Higher Education Environments
A book edited by Jayne Cubbage (Bowie State University) Email: jcubbage@bowiesate.edu or drjcubbage@gmail.com
Introduction
In the 21st century the demand for media education remains high.  Yet, many mass communication and media programs lack meaningful and targeted media literacy courses. Such low implementation levels have a direct impact on student engagement and media workforce readiness.  While many schools are in the process of revamping mass communication and media studies programs to meet the unfettered demand of high media consumption levels, media literacy remains conspicuously absent from the redesign process.  This publication will address the increasing need to reexamine the current path for journalism and mass communication education in the 21st century as well as the imperative to add full scale media literacy programs to existing curricula in higher education.
Objective of the Book
This book aims to provide additional perspective and discussion to the existing discourse and body of literature on media literacy and the many ways it may be implemented in the college and university curriculum.  It will be written for educators and professionals alike who want to gain better understanding of the topic of media literacy and its role in teaching relevant and effective journalism and mass communication in the 21st century.
Target Audience
The target audience of this book will be composed of journalism and mass communication educators, journalists, undergraduate students who seek to gain greater understanding of the concept of media literacy, its place in the university curriculum and its role in society.  More specifically, the book will provide insights to graduate students seeking to enter the educational profession as mass communication educators, existing media and cultural studies professors, university administrators and governing officials as well as media policy makers and accrediting bodies for journalism and mass communication education.
