Call for Book Chapters on Invitational Rhetoric

In 1995, we (Sonja Foss and Cindy Griffin) initiated a conversation within the communication discipline regarding the definition of rhetoric, the presence and potential of an invitational rhetoric, and its implications for communication scholars and practitioners. That conversation, without doubt, has been quite lively and influential for those seeking to understand how and in what ways rhetoric works. As we approach the 25th anniversary of the invitational project, we are seeking the submission of original book chapters to be included in an edited book on invitational rhetoric, tentatively titled Exploring Invitational Rhetoric: Expanding Conversations about Human Communication, for which we are now pursuing a publisher. The book is designed to present a robust, coherent, and expansive picture of invitational rhetoric, and we are interested in manuscripts in the following categories:

-       Foundations: Manuscripts that explore the foundations, key assumptions, and starting points of invitational rhetoric

-       Extensions: Manuscripts that expand the tenets of invitational rhetoric into new theoretical directions, including connections to other theories

-       Applications: Manuscripts that show invitational rhetoric in practice in various contexts, including but not limited to the arenas of politics, activism, community development, organizational development, education, health communication, media, and technology

We will be contributing new work to the volume, but one of our primary objectives is to create a space for new voices to enrich the theorizing about invitational rhetoric. Chapters should be approximately 9,000 words (not counting endnotes), and we are open to including images, diagrams, tables, and figures. Manuscripts should be prepared according to The Chicago Manual of Style, 16th edition.

Manuscripts are due on February 1, 2018. Questions about the project and manuscripts should be submitted to both of us at: Cindy.Griffin@colostate.edu and Sonja.Foss@ucdenver.edu.
