 6. Scholar-Activist Award

The CCCS Division honors a division member who has taken action to challenge, resist, or make progress in solving a social injustice that concerns scholars in the Critical and Cultural Studies Division.  Examples may include founding a nonprofit organization that addresses poverty, climate change, homophobia, racism, sexual assault, sexism, treatment of prisoners, and ability issues.  Or, this award may honor a scholar who has made significant contributions to ending larger systems of exploitation including patriarchy, capitalism, and heteronormativity.  In short, this award honors a scholar who significantly contributes to social justice above and beyond their research and teaching.  We especially encourage nominations that reflect the interplay of scholarly research, teaching and activism.  In other words, we are especially interested in those nominees who integrate their critical and cultural communication insights in their research and/or teaching with activist intervent!
 ions.

Nominations should include a letter of nomination that describes the significance of the scholar’s activism in expanding social justice and the ways in which the scholar’s activism may inform her/his own or other critical cultural communication scholars’ work.  Also include the nominee's vita. The winner need not have completed their graduate studies (MA or PhD) yet, but highest degree received and present professional position should be noted on the nominee’s cv.  For consideration, all materials must be received by August 1, 2017.

7. Best Student Paper Award

This award honors the best student paper submitted to the 2017 convention. This paper will be selected by the Critical and Cultural Studies Division program planner and submitted to the Awards Committee.  No further applications materials required.

Call for Paper Session Participants for NCA 2017- Corporations' PR Responses to Political Issues

I'm seeking participants for a paper session about corporations' responses to current political issues to be submitted for consideration to the Public Relations Division at NCA 2017. In the past few days, various organizations have released statements about corporate policies or their stance on immigration and/or refugees either to the general public or to their internal publics, while other companies have indicated their stance on these issues through their Superbowl LI advertising. I'm interested in putting together a paper session that will examine how the actions or statements of these companies can be considered through the lens of public relations theories and practices.

Papers can approach the theme in a variety of different ways, among them: through the lens of corporate social responsibility; advocacy or activist public relations; community-building with internal and/or external publics; image-building and reputation management; representation of organizational legacy, mission and values; the relevance or legitimacy of corporations commenting on political issues; the risk of brands attracting or alienating particular publics; engaging in brand-building and storytelling; responding to what can be considered an ethical challenge; or any other aspect through which this theme can be interpreted. Papers that can connect to the 103rd NCA Annual Conference theme "Our Legacy, Our Relevance" are particularly welcome.

Please email Arshia Anwer at aanwer01@manhattan.edu by March 1 if you're interested in participating in this paper session. Include the paper title, a 250-300 word abstract, and author's name and institutional affiliation in your email.
